What is Meant by Mobile Technology?

Many people might be surprised to know what is meant by mobile technology. For them mobile devices such as hand held cellular phones, lap top computers with keyboards and wireless internet access can be equated to computers that are used in the home. People have become accustomed to being connected to the internet in their pockets. The mobile phone is the conduit between the internet and the user.

Mobile phones today can do so much more than just make and receive phone calls. For example, some mobile phones allow the user to surf the web and check e-mails as well as downloading content such as images or music to their portable media player. Internet access is not only faster when using a cell phone that accesses multiple networks; it can also be used to stream live television. It can also be used to surf the web through applications such as Google Maps and Yahoo Maps, which are available for free. Mobile internet use is fast becoming the norm and with more people signing up for service plans that include mobile phones, this trend is not likely to abate any time soon.

What is meant by mobile technology when someone talks about internet access is that the phone can act like a computer and access the internet via wireless networks such as GSM, CDMA, WLL, GPRS and TDMA. Depending on the type of cell phone, the memory capacity may vary, but they all have at least 16MB of memory. The cell phone will then connect to a wireless network that will provide access to various services. These services include messaging services such as SMS and MMS, online/offline applications, access to the internet using mobile networks and multimedia services such as streaming music or videos. Some cell phones to provide voice calls to other cell phones as well as calling 911.

A mobile phone that can also act as a laptop or netbook when connected to a wireless network has been developed by several companies. This is a great idea for those who need mobility but do not want to pay for an additional handset. The use of a mobile phone with an attached keyboard allows the user to use the phone like a laptop or netbook and to access various services as needed. The battery life of the netbook has also been improved over the years so that in some cases the netbook can be used for more than twelve hours without having to recharge the battery.

What is meant by mobile technology when someone says that a person can use their mobile phone as a PDA is that they can access applications that are specifically designed for the mobile phone. These applications can include applications to find local restaurants, find a hotel, find a car and even order takeout. They may also access business applications to keep track of inventory or to make bookkeeping easier. It is very similar to what a tablet PC would do except for the mobility and the ability to use applications in real time.

There are many applications that are designed for the mobile phone. This technology will continue to improve and make life easier. Because of this, the cell phone industry will continue to grow. In the next decade there will be more sophisticated phones that are capable of doing many things including video conferencing or playing computer games.
